From Backyard Golf to Championship Dreams
Published by Elisabeth Lowell
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing the incredible Sophia Macias, a rising star in the world of golf and a true inspiration. At just 17, Sophia has already carved out a remarkable journey, from picking up a club at age six to competing in the Steph Curry Underrated Golf Tour Championship. Her passion for the game and her insightful perspective on life are nothing short of inspiring.
From Denim Springs to the Underrated Tour
Hailing from Denim Springs, Louisiana, Sophia has lived and breathed golf since she first swung a club in her backyard, inspired by her competitive little brother.
By the time she was 10, she was traveling and competing, showcasing her talent and determination. Now, as she prepares to sign with Tulane University, she reflects on her incredible journey with gratitude and excitement.
"The Underrated Golf Tour has been so much more than just golf to me. It’s a family—everyone there supports each other, and I’ve learned so much, not just about the game but about life too. I’m so thankful for the friendships and experiences I’ve gained, and I know they’ll stick with me for a lifetime."

What It’s Really Like
to Compete in the
Underrated Golf Tour
Sophia’s recent experience at the Steph Curry Underrated Golf Tour Championship was a game-changer, where she not only competed but also found a sense of community that left a lasting impact. “It’s not just a golf tour; it’s an Underrated family,” she shared, reflecting on the support, camaraderie, and the incredible memories she made with fellow competitors. A particularly special moment occurred during a birthday celebration for Lauren Fierce, where the shared joy and friendship made the experience even more memorable.
During the tour, Sophia played in the final group and brought her grandmother along for support. “She was impressed with every shot, even the bad ones!” Sophia laughed, showcasing the genuine moments that make golf so meaningful to her.
She also had the chance to learn from LPGA pro Mariah Stackhouse, who offered wisdom on the mental side of golf, saying, “Whether you win or lose, you go home the same person.” This advice stuck with Sophia, reflecting her maturity and deeper understanding of the game.
Empowering the Next Generation
of Golfers
Sophia is not only an incredibly talented player but also a passionate mentor. She encourages anyone interested in golf to dive in, highlighting the many opportunities it offers, especially in the corporate world. As a female golfer competing in a male-dominated sport, she’s proud to see more representation, having even won multiple championships against male competitors.
Beyond her competitive success, Sophia is dedicated to growing the game, founding her nonprofit, No Worries, Just Birdies, to mentor aspiring golfers. With her senior year underway, she’s excited to lead her high school team and is gearing up for tournaments like the Elite Invitational and Dixie Amateur.
